2021 Chateau de Marsannay Les Favieres,  Marsannay AOC

Variety:  100% Pinot Noir

Region of Origin:  Marsannay AOC, Burgundy

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby-red with vibrant clarity and a garnet rim, it presents intense aromas of ripe red and black cherries, bramble, forest undergrowth, spice and a hint of warm oak. On the palate, it’s full-bodied and structured, offering dense layers of fruit framed by firm, yet refined tannins. Layered spice and subtle earthiness weave through, with a long, persistent finish. The wine’s balance of power, savory depth and freshness makes it food-friendly and ideal with red meats or rich stews.

Wine Making

Sylvain Pabion has been the chief winemaker at Château de Marsannay since 2015, leading a transformation of the estate towards organic viticulture and producing single vineyard cuvées to highlight the unique terroirs across its 40 ha of vines. They were certified in 2022. Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted meticulously to ensure only optimum fruit enters the cellar. Fermentation uses a mix of whole-bunch and destemmed fruit, with maceration lasting 12–13 days to extract balanced phenolics. Aging occurs for 13 months in 40% new oak barrels and one- to two-year-old barrels, followed by three months in tank prior to bottling. The approach preserves purity of fruit, terroir expression, and firm structure.

The Vineyard

Les Favières is a 0.7 ha climat just above Marsannay’s village, part of a group of climats currently under consideration for Premier Cru status. Soils are shallow, with crinoidal and Comblanchien limestone mixed with brown marl and clay; ideal for producing concentrated, mineral Pinot Noir. Vines in this parcel average around 60 years of age and yield 20–23 hl/ha, delivering intensity and depth. Château de Marsannay, under owner Olivier Halley since 2012, emphasises organic and agro-ecological practices. Horse‑ploughing, green manures and minimal sulphur that nurture biodiversity and soil health across their 40 ha estate, including 28 ha within the Marsannay appellation and several notable Côte de Nuits climats.
