2017 Ulrich Langguth Alte Reben ‘Old Vines’ Troken Dry Riesling

 Variety:  100% Riesling

Region of Origin: Mosel, Germany

Tasting Notes

Medium-full, yellow colour of an aged wine; lots of paraffin wax, honey and toast on the bouquet, citrus rind, snuffed candle too. A very unusual and individual aged Riesling character. Light and crisp, intense and fine with a little phenolic texture. Very dry aftertaste.

 Winemaker and Winemaking

The winemakers are Patrick Ulrich Langguth and Markus Ulrich Langguth, who manage Weingut Ulrich Langguth in the Mosel region of Germany. Grapes are gently whole bunch pressed to preserve delicate aromatics and reduce phenolic extraction. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks to retain freshness and fruit purity. Indigenous (wild) yeasts are used. Fermentation is carried out at cool temperatures to encourage slow, steady development of aromatics. The fermentation is typically taken to dryness, with residual sugar well below 9 g/L—often <5 g/L—for a trocken (dry) designation.  The wine rests on its fine lees (sur lie) for a short period (a few months), contributing a creamy texture and subtle complexity without interfering with its linear structure. No oak is used. The wine is typically filtered and stabilized before bottling.

 The Vineyards

This family-owned estate, established in 1921 by Ulrich Langguth Sr., is now operated by the sixth generation of the Langguth family. Patrick Langguth, after a career in law and corporate finance, returned to his roots to oversee the winery alongside his brother Markus. The 2017 vintage is crafted from 30-year-old vines cultivated on the steep, slate-rich slopes of the Enkircher Ellergrub vineyard. This site is renowned for its blue slate and quartzite soils, which contribute to the wine's high mineral density and refined fruit character.
